Personal Finance Blog Pet Peeves
So I’ve been watching the PF network for a while now, adding a couple hundred RSS feeds to my Google Reader and reading them on a daily basis to get ideas, motivation, more knowledge and different opinions and views on specific scenarios.
There’s a couple of things that have really started to tick me off, for the most part it can be boiled down to 2 things, everyone seems to have started their blog for one reason or another: save more money or get out of debt. Then somewhere along the line, a few bloggers started making some money, good money, enough money so that it became their full time job and all they had to do was maintain and grow their readership while promoting credit cards, bank accounts, and whatever else pay per post decided they wanted them to write about. Enter the I jumped on the bandwagon way too late crowd, who at first started their PF blog to help them with their money, then discovered the endless possibilities of making $3 per post that they write for an advertiser…
So now on my reader once a week, I get about 50 blogs that just have LINK CARNIVALS the most evil of the clowns, I don’t even know the purpose, they all write about each others blogs, or a specific post, but I think you have to post about someone else, for them to post about you, and so the vicious circle continues. Basically it increases their google rank, annoys the shit out of me and made me click the UNSUBSCRIBE button from their feeds.
Pet peeve #2 - advertisements, I didn’t sign up for your blog to read about some stupid credit card that gets me 3% cash back, and will make me breakfast. Or to sign up for an ING bank account, over and over and over again. It’s pathetic, these personal finance blogs have turned into personal advertisement accounts, all for what? an extra $6 a month?
I guess this is a bit of a rant, and there are still some good PF blogs out there (I know I don’t fit into this category!), I really enjoy Krystal At Work, Nerd Money and In Debt because I like nice things. They seem to be keeping it real enough, or personal enough that I look forward to their posts to see what they’re up to.

What about a link fiesta? Or a link bonanza? Would that work?

GetRichSlick.com - Ad free for last two years, No Link Fests EVER, No google rank begging EVER.
I have the exact same peeves!

My only peeve is with PF blogs that clutter up their sites with ads for DreamHost and MozyHome. Imagine soiling the beauty of one’s profound PF musings with crass advertisement (or ’sponsors’) - all for a measly $5 a month
And aren’t all those “goals” graphics that clutter up lots of PF blogs really, really annoying? After all, who else in the universe will care if you’re 38.7% of the way towards saving $8,000 for Aunt Gracie’s operation?

Hahaha I agree that there’s a lot of circular linking going on in the blogosphere. Ads don’t bother me as much as PayPerPost, I can put blinders on when I visit a site and just focus on the content of the post, but the PPPs are disguised as real content… bleh!
